Saona or Catalina?

Both are day trips by boat from the south-east coast, both come with lunch and an open bar. One is a long beach island with a starfish sandbar; the other is a small island with a reef by the shore.

Saona and Catalina get compared because they are sold from the same hotel lobbies, at similar prices. They are not the same kind of day. Saona is about 110 km² of beaches and palms inside a national park, reached from Bayahibe. Catalina is a small island of about 9.6 km² off La Romana, with coral close to shore.

Do not confuse Catalina with Isla Catalinita, a tiny islet near Saona. They are kilometres apart.

The quick answer

Pick Saona for long palm beaches, the starfish sandbar and the classic catamaran party. Pick Catalina for snorkelling over a reef near the beach and a smaller island with fewer people. On this site the Catalina day costs a little less than the cheapest Saona day. Both take 8 to 10 hours from Punta Cana.

Which is better, Catalina Island or Saona Island?

Where is Catalina Island, and how big is it?

Off La Romana, about 2.4 km from the coast. It is about 4.5 km long and 3 km wide, with its highest point 18 m above the sea.

Catalina Island lies off the south-east coast in La Romana province. It is made of coral stone, with dunes, mangroves and reefs, and large shallow sandbars offshore. Cruise ships anchor off the island on some Caribbean routes and bring passengers ashore by tender.

It also has a famous wreck. In 2007, researchers from Indiana University found the remains of Captain Kidd's ship, the Quedagh Merchant, about 70 m offshore in roughly 3 m of water. The site is protected, and Go Dominican Republic, the official tourism site, describes it as a Living Museum of the Sea.

Both islands have shallow sandbars. Only Saona's is famous for starfish.

Is Catalina the same as Catalinita?

No. Isla Catalinita is a tiny islet of about 22 ha, 3.5 km north of Saona. Catalina Island is a separate, bigger island off La Romana.

The names are close, which is where the confusion starts. Catalinita is part of Cotubanamá National Park, the same park as Saona. Catalina is further west, off La Romana, and you reach it from there.

When a tour says Catalina, check the departure point. From La Romana means Catalina Island. From Bayahibe, on a Saona day, it probably means Catalinita.

Which is better for snorkelling, Saona or Catalina?

Catalina. Its reef starts close to the beach and the snorkel stop is the centre of the day; at Saona, snorkelling is a short stop on a few tours.

Go Dominican Republic lists coral reefs around Catalina, including the Catalina Wall, which PADI says has exceptional visibility and also offers great snorkelling in the shallows. The Catalina day includes a reef snorkel with gear.

At Saona, the best-known snorkel spot is the old pier at Catuano, visited by the luxury catamaran, the natural pool tour and others. The natural pool is sand, not reef. Full details in snorkelling at Saona.

Which island is less crowded?

Catalina, as a rule. Saona's park is the most visited protected area in the country, and the classic tours share one busy beach.

Cotubanamá National Park, home to Saona, had 808,090 visitors in 2024 (Dominican Today). There is no comparable count for Catalina, and cruise ships do call there; Wikipedia notes a cruise line runs a private beach on the island. A guest on the Catalina day summed it up as "far fewer people than on Saona".

If you want Saona without the crowd, pick the small group of 20. Another option is the VIP four-beach tour.

How does a Catalina day from Punta Cana work?

A minibus to the La Romana cruise port, a catamaran to the island, a reef snorkel, beach time, a buffet and an open bar. About 9 hours.

The Catalina day with Aquatic EmotionRD collects you in Punta Cana and drives you to the cruise port in La Romana, about 15 km west of Bayahibe. From there a catamaran crosses to Catalina, with a stop to snorkel over the reef, gear included. Then you get time on the beach, a buffet lunch and drinks from the open bar before sailing back.

What you give up compared with Saona: the starfish sandbar and the long palm beaches.

Which costs less, Saona or Catalina?

The Catalina day, by a small margin over the cheapest Saona day here. Both include pickup, lunch and an open bar.

The difference is small. Catalina runs for 9 hours. The budget Saona day runs for 8 to 8.5 hours and costs a little more, and the classic Saona day a little more again. What each Saona tour covers is in the guide to what is included.

Should you do both?

If you have a week and love the sea, yes, on separate days. Saona for the beach, Catalina for the reef.

Both days are long and both start early, so do not book them back to back. Put a pool day between them. If you only have time for one, the rule is simple: snorkellers go to Catalina, beach people go to Saona.
