Snorkelling at Saona

Saona is a beach island first. You can snorkel there, on the right tour, at the right stop. Here is where, with whom, and what to leave alone.

Most people come to Saona for sand and the natural pool, and the classic tours have no snorkel stop. A handful of tours add one, usually at the old pier at Catuano, the channel between the island and the mainland. One tour here bans snorkelling outright.

The water is warm all year: average sea temperatures at Bayahibe range from about 26 °C in February and March to about 29 °C from August to October (Weather2Travel).

The quick answer

Yes, you can snorkel at Saona on some tours. The luxury catamaran, the beaches and natural pool tour, and the cruise-port day include gear, with a stop at the Catuano pier on the first two. The natural pool is a sandbar with sea stars, good for wading and looking, not reef snorkelling. Do not lift a starfish out of the water. The small group of 20 forbids snorkelling. For a real reef, Catalina Island is the better day.

Can I snorkel at Saona Island?

Yes, on tours with a snorkel stop. The classic speedboat-and-catamaran days do not include one, and one small-group tour forbids it.

Saona's waters hold coral reefs, with 40 fish species and 10 coral species listed on Wikipedia. The tours that snorkel go to a few set spots, mainly the Catuano pier. On the classic days you can still swim with a mask from the beach if you bring one, but there is no guided stop.

If snorkelling is your priority, book a tour that names it in the itinerary. The next section lists them.

What is the snorkel spot at the Catuano pier?

An old, broken pier at Catuano, at the west end of Saona, beside the channel that separates the island from the mainland.

Catuano is the naval post at Saona's western tip, across the strait from the mainland. The luxury catamaran gives about 45 minutes here at what the listing calls the broken pier of Catuano, before a quiet beach corner and lunch on board. The beaches and natural pool tour stops at the Catuano piers by speedboat, after mangroves and the Peñon cliff.

Watch for the brown pelicans on the posts while you are there, and stay close to your guide: boats use the channel.

Can you snorkel at the natural pool?

You can put your face in the water, but it is a sandbar, not a reef. The draw is the sea stars on the sand, in water about waist-deep.

The natural pool, or piscina natural, is a shallow sandbar in open sea off the island, often near Palmilla. Boats anchor around it and guests stand in the water for about 40 minutes on most tours; the luxury catamaran gives 45 to 60 minutes. The sand is pale and the water clear, so a mask helps you spot the cushion sea stars.

With dozens of people standing around, it is not a quiet snorkel. Go for the colour and the starfish; snorkel properly somewhere else.

Can you touch the starfish at Saona?

No. Look and photograph them where they lie. Lifting a sea star out of the water can kill it, and several operators forbid touching marine life.

Sea stars breathe through their tube feet and skin gills, which need water moving over them. Out of the water, a starfish begins to suffocate, and the stress can kill it later even if it survives the photo (Beachcombing Magazine). Oils on your hands do it no good either.

The natural pool tour says touching starfish is not allowed, and the small group of 20 forbids touching marine life. Take the picture with the sea star on the sand, through the water. It looks better anyway.

Which tours do not allow snorkelling?

The small group of 20 lists snorkelling, diving and touching marine life as not allowed.

The small group of 20 is built around beach time: a speedboat both ways, the natural pool, and about 4 hours on a beach with reserved loungers. Its listing rules out snorkelling and diving. If you want both quiet and snorkelling, book the luxury catamaran instead.

On the classic tours snorkelling is not banned, but nothing is arranged either. Treat a mask there as a bonus.

What is the best snorkelling spot near Punta Cana?

Catalina Island, off La Romana, for a reef close to the beach. Around Punta Cana itself, there is reef along the Bávaro coast.

PADI says the country's longest reef runs from Punta Cana to Bávaro, and that Catalina has great snorkelling as well as the Catalina Wall for divers (PADI). Bayahibe's shallow Peñon reef, inside the national park, is known for rays, turtles and octopus. The Catalina day is the simplest way to snorkel a proper reef on a day trip from Punta Cana.

What should you bring to snorkel at Saona?

Your own mask if you have one, reef-friendly habits, water shoes, a rash vest or T-shirt for the sun, and a dry bag.

  • Mask and snorkel: gear is included on the snorkel tours, but your own fits better.
  • Sun cover: a rash vest or old T-shirt. Your back burns fast when you float face down.
  • Water shoes: for the pier area and the walk into the sea.
  • Hands off: do not stand on coral or touch sea life.
  • Swimming ability: tell the crew if you are not confident. Ask for a life vest.
